South-East Grid for Learning has been working on a a web-based tool to support new arrival assessment and early profiling. The tool is a questionnaire supported by written L1 and buttons providing oral translation. It allows schools to conduct a parent conference and gather crucial background data without the presence of a bilingual practitioner. They’re keen to get people to test the system in a real context and provide feedback, which you can do using the weblink given above.

Brian Huxley, a teacher at Ryton Park Primary School in Workshop, has produced this website aimed at teachers of pupils with EAL.
If you have Polish children at your school then you might already by familiar with Ryton Park’s Polish Speaker, an interactive powerpoint containing over 200 Polish words or phrases related to school. It’s a paid download, but there is a free trial available as well as versions of the software in Lithuanian and Romanian.
