Traidcraft, one of the UK’s leading Fairtrade organisations, have put together this collection of resources for teaching students about the concept of fair trade and Fairtrade products. There are games and activities to help convey the idea of fair and unfair trade, several plans for assemblies, introductory powerpoints and also activities looking at specific examples of Fairtrade food.

This St John Ambulance KS1 site has been designed to promote and teach first aid and health & safety in schools. Nine-year old Johnny Wright  stars in a video adventure and several photo stories where he helps children suffering from asthma, grazed knees, twisted ankles and broken wrists. Resources include suggestions for how to use the photo stories, curriculum references for teachers and a set of first aid information sheets.

The Fearless website has been produced by UK charity Crimestoppers. Its ‘Not a Young Person?’ section contains a collection of material designed to help teachers discuss topics such as drugs, theft and vandalism with their students. There is an assembly framework linked to each topic as well as ideas for classroom activities.

These resources, from Cancer Research UK, are designed to help promote sun safety in schools. Lesson activities include creating a product to provide shade from the sun, measuring the length of shadows and creating pop-up education books. There is a sample sun protection policy to download, a collection of informative cartoon animations, tips for running a school sports day and a selection of useful links. There are also lots of resources connected to the annual SunSmart competition which this year (2010) gives schools a chance to win a shade canopy worth over £3000.

This page on the Healthy Planet website has a collection of lesson plans, for years 1 to 6, designed to promote awareness of environmental issues. Although they’ve been specifically produced for use around Earth Day (April 21st) the ideas could easily be used at any time of the year.

The UK Department for Transport has produced this resource to help teach primary students about road safety. The site features posters, activity worksheets, videos, games and stories. Teachers can download a road safety education guidance booklet. There are also a collection of home-link sheets to encourage parental involvement.

The Health & Safety Sign Association has a selection of resources for primary school students aimed at improving their recognition and understanding of standard safety signs. Activities and resources on the site introduce the colours and shapes, used in safety and informational symbols, and get students to design their own signs.

As well as fundraising resources, the Sport Relief teachers section includes cross-curricular lesson plans, interactive resources, assembly ideas  and a collection of activities for foundation stage children. Sport Relief 2010 runs from the 19th to 21st March this year so there’s still time to send off for a free primary schools kit.

Tony Crowley has adapted his excellent secondary school career awareness resources to make them useful in a primary school setting. The materials, which are illustrated, teach about the world of work through games, group activities, quizzes, questionnaires and worksheets. Because of the size of the files, they’ve been made available through the social publishing website Scribd.
